How to start the engagement ring process
Make sure you and your partner are on the same page – budget (price range), design, size
- Have in mind fairly specific parameters
Some useful guidelines and considerations (if you are surprising her without her inputs for the ring)
- Is she more classic or modern? Feminine or sophisticated? Does she wear more silver or gold?
- Know her ring size > borrowing a ring which she already owns; measure using a nylon string while she’s asleep
- Will she wear the engagement ring 24/7 and does she have a preference for less bulky designs – i.e. being able to wear it for any occasion – work, cafe lunches with her BFFs, night outs
- Certain shapes pair better with other gems in multi-stone rings. Round, Oval and Marquise all work well. Pear and Heart shape are more challenging
- If she tends towards the traditional, a round shape rarely misses
- Try on as much as possible and do all your online research (lab grown vs naturally mined)
- Think of it this way: laboratory-grown diamonds are like ice from your refrigerator, while natural diamonds are like ice from a glacier. They are both ice, although their formation stories and the age of each are very different.
- Find a trusted expert
